What is a Makeup Artist? Who should really hold this title?

Loving to prepare meals and being a great cook does not automatically convert you into a Chef. The same applies to makeup. Being great at applying makeup on yourself and being a cosmetic aficionado does not automatically convert you into a Makeup Artist aka: MUA. With all the new techonological advances, online portals quickly became a huge market to broadcast yourself, your business and hobbies. YouTube has opened the doors for many makeup addicts to share their latest purchases, video blogging, do product reviews, remake looks found in magazines and become makeup gurus. However, the term "MUA" is used far too loosely and presently, it seems that everyone is a makeup artist.

What exactly is a makeup artist? Well, to begin with, there are various facets of makeup artistry. There are artists that only focus on bridal work and special occasion makeup in which they strive to make their clients look naturally beautiful on such important events and ensure long wear, smudge resistant makeup. Airbrush makeup artists apply makeup using a compressor and can use their skills to obtain a lot of bridal work and also air brush body painting. There are body painters that can work with an airbrush machine or other cosmetics for the body and hand paint. Special effects artists in my opinion are on an entire different level of makeup artistry becuase they deal with molding and prosthetics, usually using their artistry for TV and film. TV and film makeup artists usually deal with High Definition and have to apply makeup to their clients in a well blended, natural format because HD television shows any mistake and is very unforgiving. Theatrical artists are those that primarily work on set with Broadway shows.  Many people who work in retail can also be considered makeup artists because they must apply makeup on clients of all skin colors, ethnic backgrounds and ages. The most recognized form of makeup artistry are those of editorial/high fashion makeup artists that master clean faces but also can do marvelous high fashion and creative looks.

Now that we have established the various types of makeup artists, I would like to state that many successful artists never went to makeup school, cosmetology school or took any type of class or course. Just like with many other forms of art, it is a natural talent that does not necessarily need formal training. Living in America, there are many schools that offer classes so if this is a career that interests you I advise you to look into your options for learning the basics. I, personally have never gone to school or taken a class but I am looking forward to taking a few classes by world renown makeup artists next year.

One thing that all makeup artists (despite the field you focus in) have in common is that we all get paid, monetary compensation for the vast majority of our services.  You cannot call yourself a MUA if you simply do makeup on yourself and are not a working MUA that works out of a store, salon, or are a mobile, freelance traveling artist.  Professional MUAs have pro kits with makeup in it ready to do makeup on clients of all ages, skin types and textures along with all ethnic backgrounds. As makeup artists we also know a lot about skin care because skin preparation is essential prior to any makeup application. Product knowledge is of extreme importance because we deal with clients that have different needs, sensitivities and wants.

With so many gurus on the rise, aspiring artists feel that doing extravagant looks with bold colors and going to extremes will denote how talented you are as a MUA. Unfortunately, this is not true. It is a lot more difficult to make a client look naturally beautiful without making it look like they are caked with makeup than to create an extreme look with loads of cosmetics. I, just like many beginnig MUAs was like this when I first started. I wanted to prove that I knew how to do creative makeup and started out by doing makeup with  bright colors and what not, but slowly realized that your main income as a MUA and respect comes from clean beauty. Trust me, I will always have a love for bright and dramatic makeup but I do know that in regards to my career as a makeup artist, I need to focus on creating clean, natural, supple skin. Doing this, I am ensuring more paid work. I occasionally still do creative makeup for my portfolio but mainly get booked to do clean makeup.

Makeup artists also are color masters and can create custom colored foundations for each client, know face/bone structure and apply makeup differently according to each client face shape, age and needs. We can sculpt and transform a person's face without looking like they are wearing a mask and enhance best features while diminishing flaws. If your work only shows what you can do on yourself and you only practice with your face, then how can you be a MUA if you are not accustomed to various skin textures, types, concerns, conditions and ages? Not to mention color and undertones.

So, in essence, if you do not have clients, do not get paid work, tear sheets, photos from your work on other people to add to your portfolio, then you are not a makeup artist. You can be a makeup lover, aficionado, junkie or guru, but definitely not a MUA.

I am not bashing YouTube gurus, bloggers or makeup junkies. I am simply posting about this to clarify the jobs that real working makeup artists do. Also, as artists, most of us do more than one simple type of makeup and almost all freelancers do bridal, catalog, editorial and TV& Film makeup. We even try to dabble with SFX makeup. Many YouTube gurus are not simply gurus, they are working freelance MUA that travel and have numerous clients and sponsors. You can pretty much tell who these are because they don't always do the same cut crease look with false lashes all the time, they teach tips and tricks of the trade as well.

Thank you for taking the time to read my latest posting. I have a lot to work on as an artist myself but I put in a lot of time, effort and money into my passion and career and I am highly offended when people refer to themselves as MUA when they truely aren't.

Fantastic Affordable Mascara

Soon to Come: Companion Tutorial Video: "Beautiful Bat Wings; Get the most out of your lashes"

Happy New Year!!!
Welcome 2012!!!

My first love of cosmetics is that of Mascara. Over the years, I have tried a veritable smorgasbord of brands, formulas, brushes and price points. There are some really great products out there and honestly each brand works differently for everyone.  I, however,  happen to be a lifelong fan of Maybelline New York. More specifically and current, The Volume Express Line. I not only keep this line of lash lengthners and volumizers in my professional kit, this is also the line I carry in my personal makeup bag and use daily.

For the past few years I have really loved The COLOSSAL collection (part of The Volume Express Line) which is an instant Volumizing formulation. This collection comes in a few great colors including Classic Brown, Classic Black and Glam Black (which is a blacker more glossy version of the Classic Black)...and all colors come in both Washable and Waterproof formulations. It also has a fantastic shaped brush with actual nylon bristles which I believe is best for maximum application.

My most recent LOVE has been the invention of The Falsies and The Falsies Flaired Line ( also part of The Volume Express Line) This line combines the best of the COLOSSAL Volumizing with the amazing lengthening look of FALSE LASHES!! This collection also comes in a handful of great colors including Classic Brown, Classic Black and Glam Black (which is a blacker more glossy version of the Classic Black) and the addition of Black Drama (an extremely black, matte finish mascara)...and all colors come in both Washable and Waterproof formulations.

It also has a fantastic brush with actual nylon bristles (which I believe is best for maximum application) and the wand stick has a bit of flexibility to assist in easier application. The brush itself is slim,  sans bushy bristles with a spoon style curve downward. The curve of the brush makes it very easy to fit across your lash line and lift lashes upwards and out allowing the mascara to provide nice curl, decent volume, and a fair bit of length.

Maybelline The Falsies Volum’ Express Mascara is a kera-fiber mascara that instantly builds lashes up to 8x’s the volume to give a false lash look. This has quite a nice inky black pigmentation which pairs up great with both subtle and smoky eyes. Color pay off is very dramatic and it makes my lashes look incredibly dark and mysterious! Yay!

Something to keep in mind when using this mascara. It is incredibly juicy and can be a bit tricky to master if you try to apply it too fast or with haste. This is a mascara which needs to be applied methodically and evenly. Another thing to think about is that this formulation dries faster than most mascaras on the market.

Another thing to keep in mind is that any mascara has a use by date (weather its printed on the package or not)...most should be replaced between 4-8 weeks. YES...2 months MAX! That may seem like a short amount of time but think about it! Every time you pull the wand out of the tube and re-insert it you are trapping air in the tube...and... not only are you drying it out but trapping microbes, dust particles and other eye germs inside when you screw down the cap. Put aside the ick factor of old mascara, when a mascara is too old, the formulation will not work as well thus giving more of a chance for clumping and dis-satisfaction for the product.

Over all I give this product a 4 star rating!!! It will run you about $8 and is well worth it!

Fact:  Maybelline New York is owned by L'Oreal, the second largest collector, owner and distributor of the worlds cosmetic brands....the first is Estee Lauder.

A Note of Gratitude

My clients are everything to me! I make a point each day to appreciate fact that I would not be where I am today where it not for my absolutely amazing clients, fans and supporters. You are the reason I do what I do. The reason that I can start my day down and dreary and end it with a smile on my face, a giddiness in my soul and a sense of deep satisfaction.  I thank you for the incredible support and trust that you have shown me over the years and even more so, the encouragement and support that you give well after our time together is

I would like to also thank my fellow artists. The immense talents that are here in little ol' West Michigan are astounding. You push me and challenge me to be a better artist and I am thankful for all the kindness I have been shown over the years. I am beyond blessed to be a part of this industry and I want you to know how honored I am to be welcomed as a peer.
Most importantly I must mention my family. It is with the unyielding support and love of my husband and my parents that I have been given the freedom to pursue my dream of being an artist.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

BIG Changes for 2012!!!

Hello Everyone!!
I'm so excited to finally have this blog actually up and running!!!!

I have gotten a ton of people asking me what's going on with my business and the new site, the blog and tutorials, etc. Well let me tell you!!!!

This year has been absolutely amazing!!! I have said it time and time again, and I'll say it once more! "I have the most incredible clients on the planet!!!" You have been so gracious and so supportive of me, my art and my business, I cannot begin to thank you or repay you for your love and support!! Well, here is a start....

After going over the first half of the year's numbers and statistics for 2011, I have found that Spataro Precision Aesthetics has more than quadrupled its business from 2010 ...Astounding!! With my only intended form of advertising being monthly ads posted on Craigslist, it is my current, past and repeat clients who, with their enthusiasm to help me succeed and their wildfire recommendations, have allowed me to have a MORE than Full Time job doing what I completely adore. So, with careful consideration and discussion with my husband, affiliates and you the consumer, I decided back in July to take 6 months and re-brand the ever changing and ever rising leader in the freelance beauty industry which is Spataro Precision Aesthetics!

As a wife of an auto industry worker, I know that it's the blue collar consumers of this great state who are in need of a break...especially the women!! If you are planning a wedding, trying to further your career with top quality head shots, going to a important interview or just a hard working mother who needs to find her inner beauty beyond the "mommy" title ....you have every right to feel beautiful and experience pampering just like everyone else. This is why I have developed the slogan "Celebrity Results on a Blue Collar Budget." Because it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to be pampered and look AMAZING!!

I've toyed with scads of ideas ... but now, expect some very big changes to come in 2012!! The first being the new branding of my Makeup Services. Makeup by Heather Spataro is what I will be using from now on! Also, expect Video Tutorials, more inclusive packages, luxury products without the luxury price tag, weekly Blogs and Product reviews and as always, the most reasonable prices anywhere in the state, most importantly, in West Michigan!

Also this year, I was presented with an incredible opportunity to expand on my passion for body art and beautification through my love and hobby of Mehndi / Henna design. The sudden rise and demand for this service created a need for branding, and with the support and encouragement of all of you, Ink of India was born.

It is with this new Website that I will be able to combine and proudly present all aspects of my artistry, Makeup by Heather Spataro and Ink of India, under one roof....that will be Spataro Precision Aesthetics, LLC.

My deepest thanks to all of you who have made this business the success that it is!! I promise to continue to provide you with the best in quality services, customer care and affordable pricing!

All of My Love and Appreciation,

Heather D. Spataro~LaBash
Professional Makeup & Mehndi Artist
